7 card stud... 'elpI'm getting better at 7CS, but don't select it as a sng or ring game. I only ever play it in HORSE.
I do okay for the most part, but find a weakness when the table shortens to four players.
I'm not confident when playing just a good door card.
There must be more to it than, 'I'm showing an Ace and the others are showing spots,' but an opening raise seems often to work.
Is it really a simple as that.

The short answer is yes, it`s that simple.
As always though in poker, it depends
A lot depends on position and on your opponents. Against weak players your completion will often get through. However if they`re a bit more savvy you`re going to find yourself getting re-raised sometimes. When that happens if you smoothcall the raise you`re pretty much telling them you don`t have AA+ (unless you`re throwing in some 3rd level thinking and trying to trap). So usually if you want to continue the illusion you`re going to have to re-raise and call a 4th bet if it comes.
If 4th street doesn`t help your hand or appear to then you may have to make a tough decision to either continue your bluff or slow down the betting, perhaps even fold when your opponents 4th street looks dangerous.
As the situation you`ve set is short-handed that means you`re either in the final stages of an MTT or SNG. Therefore it`s reasonable to presume that your opponents are fairly solid players, especially in an MTT. For that reason it`s probably worth folding some of those aces when your hole cards don`t add up to much.
Let`s say I have (2c 7d) Ah. In this kind of case I`d probably fold unless I was last to act and strongly believed the bring-in would fold. From EP it`s worth folding because it adds some veracity to other times you do raise (even if on those occasions you have an equally bad hand).
However if I`m holding something like (5c 5d) Ac or (Jc 7h) Ac then I`m going to bet because although neither hand is very strong at least there is a little something to work with. In both cases any club adds posibilities and more importantly makes my board look more dangerous. Even if I don`t have a club in the hole if I bet and then catch another club on 5th it`s making it very difficult for my opponent to call unless he also has a very strong hand. In the 2nd hand any broadway card adds possibilities and of course a 7 or J would give me a pair. As always with stud it`s not just about what you have it`s about what your board looks like and what your opponents put you on.
I`ve sort of wandered off topic and onto later streets so to get back to the original question. I`m going to raise a lot of the time with a bare ace, especially when I`m last or 2nd to last to act. Whilst ever my opponents are folding I`ll keep betting but when I start to meet resistance it`s time to tighten up a little and wait until either I really have the other ace or at least I have some kind of hand that has possibilities on later streets.
This move is really more about fold equity than your hand. If the completion cost is small relative to stack size then it`s a far less effective technique. The flip-side of that is that when blinds become a very large proportion of a players stack they`re often looking to take a race with any pair or 3 suited cards. If you really have only ace high in that situation you have to be careful or you can lose a large chunk of your stack.
So yes it`s a great play but don`t get drawn into a bad situation by pursuing your bluff too far. Make sure to have an exit strategy if you pick up callers. After all, folding the occasional bluff just gets you paid when you really do have a hand.
