AK or 44?

Which hand would you rather be dealt - Ace, King (suited or unsuited) or a pair of fours? With AK you have the potential for a strong hand. With 44 you have a made hand.

I know it depends on circumstances - if you're a big stack or short stack, in a full ring game or playing heads up, in a cash game or tournament.

But as a general rule of thumb which hand would you prefer?

Miklosik

depends on position.  I'll play the drawing hand in any position.  not the made hand tho.
PoolDemon

AK suited or not any day over a small PP, not that a small PP won't hold up, but 44 is not a "huge" favorite over that hand...

Well it`s a very broad question and the answer is as always "It depends"    I can think of many situations where I`d prefer one over the other.

Having given it some thought though I`m going to swim against the tide and say 44.

My reason. I`ve hardly ever gone bust with 44 because it`s much easier to get away from both pre and post flop. Fold it to a huge raise where there are no implied odds in calling. Fold it when you don`t make your set on the flop.

It depends on what the flop is.

Arjonius

AK for the simple reason that my win rate is higher with it.  That's cutting across tournaments and ring games, all situations and positions, etc.  It's not double or anything that large, but it's also not just a negligible difference.
Kondai

get me 44.

ALL-IN PREFLOP - In many million of times  you will maybe millianare.

FLOP - If board come low then good for me, If board come high and since no one know each other card I can pretend I have high card here by c-bet.

FLOP - I have implie-odd to call if I miss flop , if and only if his stack is worth and the board not so mayny draw for str8 or flush.

SHOWNDOWN - I can win Big stack with Set or Boat here.

Actually I just win $100 ffull stack at 0.5/1 with I hold 44 and guy slow play his AA and I got 4 at the TUrn...

For AK you want to paid? the hand will paid u are AQ AJ A10  and maybe all of this hand got twopairs.. If FLOP IS AKK .. I got this before ... you will sure didn't get any paid unless your opponent have like K-x, for str8 mostly you are draw hand maybe get maybe not and when u get u may lose to flush or full house.

For 44 I get paid from every top pairs with Giga kicker and medium and buttom pairs form LAG, I got paid from every two pairs, I got paid from who make trips but not boat.

Then I choose 44 anyway and alway 44.

And just like Dangermouse already posted, It very easry to mucked 44 when not hit and board very scary, not like AK when u hit it hard U pay other hard too, for 44 the reason to lose big stack from my experience is set over set and  u hit set the flop and you called all-in shove semi-bluff flush draw, in first situation u can't do anything unless you really have read on the guy that he hit set or bigger boat, for called semi-bluff flush draw you can win more than lose ever that guy got flush u can redraw to boat.
ALLINTUIT

I would prefer to have AK suited and slow play my way into the hand and hope for a good flop. I don't like 44 because unless you hit a 4 almost every card out there is bigger than yours and any pair has you beat. just about any raise and you have to fold
