Bubble TroublePlayed a tournament on Nordica the other day ($5.50 buyin, $1250 gtd R/A) and got down to the bubble, 21 players left - 20 cash.
I was moved to a new table, 2nd hand on this new table i am sitting in the big blind, everyone folds to the button that just calls, the small blind also limps in. I have (Js , 8h). What do i do?

As i am new to the table i have no information on the other players, i feel however that none of them is strong enough to Call themselves all in. So in this situation i am more playing the position and the situation in the tournament than i am playing the cards i got dealt.
I only have 12 bb left when i push here, not much, but as i am covering both the other 2 players in chips, i put them to a difficult decision and see a good chance for me to pick up some free blinds already in the pot.
What do you guys think of my reasoning here? like or dislike the push with basically any 2 cards..
Or would you rather just check for the free flop and see what comes, and in the meantime wait out the shorter stacks at other tables to go out and take us in to the money?
Is the player on the button getting odds enough to feel that whatever hand he is limping with on the button is good enough to call himself all in?
what are your thoughts in this situation? giiive it to me..

While I've made this type of play in this situation quite a few times myself, I don't like it nearly as much as I used to. I think there's too much of your stack put at risk to gain the 4500+ that's in the pot. And the fact there are two opponents is a consideration. I'd rather make this move against only one, and preferably the SB since I think there's more chance of the button trying to be tricky by limping than the SB.

I would have just checked to see the flop and then pushed from there if I hit anything.
The point you make about waiting for the short stacks to go out from the other tables is a good one. This means you are guaranteed a cash and then can apply some pressure.
This kind of move can backfire horribly if you get called, but because you are new to the table it also sets down a marker and shows you are not to be messed with.
I've got a feeling everyone folded to your all-in. Probably your timing was perfect - with everyone desperate to make some money it could be the ideal moment to push.
But it's not a move I would have made.

i didnt say what happened after i pushed
i left that information out on purpose as i dont think the result of this specific scenario is very interesting to the topic. To leave out the result is usually a good way to generate some discussion around a situation without getting affected what actually happened.

The payout structure on Merge is not great with fields just over 100 players, in this tourney i had invested 5.50 + 5 (add-on) and 11-20th place only pay 12.50.. in this situation i am more willing to take a chance to get some chips to eventually get to the final table with a decent stack, than fold most hands and limping in to the money with a stack i cant really make anything with.
not saying my way is better than yours, it is just the way i play and think in a tourney like this. rather have 3 top 5 finishes than 10 just outside the FT.

Agreed. Interesting discussion and a scenario many people on here will have faced.
Just out of interest - not really relevant to how you played this hand - how many players started the tournament? And did you rebuy and take the add-on? Also how long had you been playing for to get to this stage?

was last week so dont remember exactly.. but say somewhere around 120 starters, maybe 2.5h and i did no rebuy but 1 addon, so total investment $10.50, so with a place 11-20 i make a profit of $2, yaaay..

Hmmm, yeah. So big incentive to push and reach the final table rather than hang on for a measly $2 profit.

IMO, being new to the table, & it is bubble time, I am much more inclined to put limpy on a medium strength hand that wud fold to a raise of all in, same for MR SB, who must have only called for the 3-1, it's a great spot to push & steal the ante's, & 2 blinds...well played...

Justifiable shove but not necessarily one I`d make at this stage in a tourney. Too many people are fond of limping in with big hands from the button at this point.
If I knew more about the player`s habits I`d be more inclined to make the play. Against relatively unknown oponents I`m more likely to see the free flop and make a move if the flop is unthreatening.
