I think, as you indicated to me in the chat room this morning, you are doing the right thing by playing a few freeroll tourneys to get back into the swing of it.
Then move up the levels to where you want to/are comfortable playing at.
I guess there are many who will switch between the two without a second thought, but for the rest of us mortals preparation and mind set is a big thing.

I should be able to answer this but I'm struggling.... I tend to switch between them when I start running cold at one of em. If I lose a couple of big pots playing cash then I know it's time to play a tourney! Trying to explain the different styles of play between the 2 is difficult though. For a start I always play short handed ring cos I like to bully I play a wider range of hands there depending on my opponents. I'm much more likely to go 20 or 30 hands in a tourney without playing hand outside the blinds. In ring (especially short handed) this would be suicidal. In ring I'm more likely to pull a move to win a big pot. I'm confident that if I have to reload it won't take me long to double back up. I mix it up from the get go in a cash game and wait till I've at least doubled in a tourney... hope this helps or at least makes a little sense!

One thing that helps me to move from tournaments and ring games more easily is remembering to play enough of the latter (which is what I play less) so that I can just sit down and play; i.e. so the adjustments are natural enough I don't have to spend more than a moment or two thinking about them.
That said, I tend to remind myself that because the blinds don't change, which means there isn't the same need to accumulate chips in order to keep up with the field, I can be more selectively aggressive. At the same time, since the stacks are deeper, I can also play a larger range of speculative hands since the implied odds are better, at least against sizable stacks.
