Poker Hall of Fame Nominees 2009

Each year during the WSOP a number of players are nominated to be elected in to the Poker Hall of Fame. The nominees are cosen both by the people behind WSOP and also based on nominations from the public.

The requirements for the Poker Hall of Fame are:
-A gambler must have played poker against acknowledged top competition,
-Played for high stakes,
-Played consistently well, gained the respect of peers,
-And stood the test of time.
-Or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results

This ten nominees of 2009 are:
Phil Ivey
Tom McEvoy
Mike Sexton
Erik Seidel
Dan Harrington
Scotty Nguyen
Tom Dwan
Barry Greenstein
Men Nguyen
Daniel Negreanu

Each of the living members of the Poker HoF and a limited number of media representatives will be sent ballots to vote for a new HoF member. Any person who receives at least 75% of the vote will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Main Event Final Table in November 2009.

so who (if anyone) do you think will be elected in to the HoF this year?

i hear there is some campaigning for Mike Sexton and Tom McEvoy. Phil Ivey has had a good run in this years WSOP, but maybe not good enough over all to get in. I really hope Tom Dwan doesnt get elected in, he is still too young and hasnt really done enough to get in there.

What are your thoughts?
Miklosik

McEvoy - yes
Sexton - yes
Greenstein -yes
Scotty - Lord, I hope not
Ivey, Negraneau - not yet
Harrington - maybe

remainder of field - no

Unfortunately, "the test of time" is pretty subjective.  Does it mean 10 years? 20? 40?  And how do you combine it with success?  First off, how do you measure success, and then how much success over how much time is enough to merit election?  Also, how do you balance cash games vs. tournaments?

20 Years seems a fair indication. I don`t think many players under the age of 40 should get in. Let`s face it, Doyle is living proof that a player can have an extrememly long career. This is something that should happen to a player closer to the end of his career rather than one just starting out, eg Durrr. This award is the poker equivalent of a gold watch for service.

As for success. Well for tournament players it`s pretty easy, bracelets, titles and consistent showing in the major series.

Obviously it`s more difficult for cash game players but Chip Reese was voted in and he was far better known for his cash game play. It`s not just the public that votes and from the other panel there are people there who know who is playing the big Vegas games and doing well.

Tom Dwan is no longer one of the nominees, he failed the "test of time" criteria

I want to  nominate murature for his   classic 6 4

Anyone who voted for Tom Dwan to be included among the nominees clearly didn't care about the HoF criteria.  It's a recurring problem with letting anyone vote, as demonstrated at least a few times by undeserving athletes getting into all-star games.
