To add on or not to add onWhen is it best to add on.
Because the range of games is vast, I suggest a field of 60 players that is reduced to 30 by the end of the re-buy period (1st hour), giving players one chance to add on. 9 get paid.
Assume the add on is not available at any other time; is it better to add on if you are part of the leading group, (to stay in touch with others in the range) or add on if part of the chasing group, (where even with an add on you will still not be close to the money).
I guess the third option would be considering an add on if between the top group and chasing group (here an add on will bring you closer to one set than the other, or maintain the gap if everyone else adds on too).
What criteria do others go by. Do you never or always add on.
Is it more a table issue for you. Does an aggressive table need more fire power added, but a limp table means you don’t add on.

I'll add on if the extra chips put in a position of not having to shove with a marginal hand. If I'm sitting in the top 5 I usually will not add on nor will I if I'm sitting in the bottom 5.

i look at the add on as part of the entry fee, i'll take it 99% of the time, staying level with wherever i'm currently at...

I'm with Pool. I will add on 100% of the time. I consider it part of the buyin when i start the tournament.

Surely there must be more to it than that.
After the first hour of play, your chipstack will be anywhere from healthy to shreaded tatters; add on 100% of the time seems to leave little in the way of planning.
That's like saying I'll always raise with

just curious, but why wouldn't you want to add on ?
if your chip stack in in tatters, y haven't you been pushing with anything to at least re-buy, after 1 hour a rebuy & add on gives you enough to play with...
if your chip leader, or darn close to it, sure you can save your money on the add on, othertwise, it makes sense to chip up & stay level with all the rest that have also done that...imo...

Because I'm a tight arse who doesn't want to invest more than the absolute minimum to win the maximum. I want to think of them as money added games, the money added coming from those who go too hard too soon and add to the ultimate prize pool.

If you do that then won't you still often end up being amongst the short stacks and will have to continue playing marginal hands in the hope of hitting several good pots to get back some of your three buy-ins for the game.

Of course there are a couple of tourneys I've seen that if a player re-buys or adds once and does make the last paying place they still end up in the negative.

There are reasons not to re-buy or add-on. Usually in turbos where the blinds are so high a rebuy might only get you a couple of extra BBs.
I might not bother with an add-on if it wasn`t going to get me close to an average stack. If I was in one of the last couple of places, depending on field size and payouts I probably wouldn`t bother. In this kind of case I think you probably need to consider how much fold equity it will give you or how much of a cushion before you`re on push/fold strategy.
If you`re up near the top though it`s probably right to take the extra chips almost every time.

we're all entitled to what we think of course, my opinion comes from the RB's I play, I don't play unlimited RB's, just max 2 RB & 1 add on, so therefore, the add on cost & 1 re-buy is what I factor in as my entry fee...

unless playing a turbo, which i would def not reccomend, your stack will be pretty darn close to avg, well above the blind levels after hour 1 to be able to play & raise more than enough & last through a small dry spell...

usually you will find if they only RB once, & bought the add on, they won't be in the negative, however, in unlimited rebuys, i've seen the winner lose money

general rule of thumb is that you should go in expecting to spend three times the buy-in amount (add-ons, re-buys, it doesn't matter but best that at least one is an add-on of course).
i think most rebuy specialists will say it's not worth playing these tournaments unless you're prepared to pay this minimum price although that doesn't mean to say you'll have to if you make a great start although i would agree with the idea that you would almost always add-on when appropriate (often at the end of the first hour) as the boys are pointing out.

So does that mean you yourself play more loose than is your common game, or that you enjoy more suckouts to chasers ?
I'm wondering, if there is no strategy to say a $1 single R/A, why not play a $3 freezeout instead.
Curiouser and curiouser.

(not the replier your looking for) but the last question, me I'd play a 3 buck freezeout any day over an RB.
the (lack of ?) mentality of the RB lends itself to much more marginal hands getting into pots, & of course the suckouts that ensue.
Sometimes though, it's the only game on the go, so me I take a WTF attitude, throw in my coins (& hope like hell)

In rebuys, I plan on buying a total of 5 units...this is the average over playing the tournament a lot....some buyins will be 3 some will be 11 but the average is 5.
This being said, I always buy on right away and any time I am able to after that. I also, never quit a rebuy tourney before the break. You have no reason to be in a rebuy tourney if you are quitiing before the real poker begins....
As for the rebuy period...i play pretty straight forward...i will play more connectors and i will also chase my flushes and straights...basically racing in situations I would normally not race...simply because I can rebuy.
As for when to rebuy, the reason you rebuy at every opportunity is wo that you can maximize your equity. Rebuys usually have very soft fields, so in order to maximize your skill, you need to have the biggest stack possible everytime you double up.

I don't play many rebuys for mainly a chicken and egg type of reason, which is that I've never played enough of them to get used to the differences in strategy - both for individual hands and for the whole tournaments. That said, it seems strange to play them if you don't intent to rebuy and add on. Why not just go play a freezeout? Yes, you can win more in rebuys, but playing with fewer chips would seem to offset that.

Thanks for the responses so far.
Some who have replied seem to be referring to multi re-buy/add on, I haven't liked the look of these so don't often play them. Do those guys think the same applies if it is a single re-buy/add on tourney.
When I wrote | Quote: | | ...I want to think of them as money added games, the money added coming from those who go too hard too soon and add to the ultimate prize pool. |
I was more thinking of single re-buy/add on games but should I also adjust my thinking in those to; the money added comes from those who fanny around only buying in once.

well, imo, a single RB with an add on, if it's a 5 buck entry, I would pound 15 bucks entry into my brain 1st, just add on and woila, a 5 buck discount on the entry if RB not needed...cool eh...
(I find slightly better play in the 1 RB than unlimited for the first hour...)
(& yes it's friggin cold over here, brain only slightly thawed out @ the moment...)

depends how many chips the add on gives you in comparison to the blinds.
If there are still lots of players left and you are short of chips and the rebuy only gives you a few blinds prob wont bother especially if I have had a few bad beats.
Also sometimes the add on gives you more chips than the rebuy. 1500 for rebuys and 2000 for addons. If you havent had to rebuy and are getting low i may do both at the end of the hour

unless i already have a nice stack i wont add on but if not i will

lots of great responces here! and my feelings kinda reflect a few others haha. I also figure the rebuy and addon into the cost of the game and use them most of the time. If short stacked in a turbo game with huge blinds I may not addon...dosn't help much at that point! haha.
as for single rebuy and addon games, I just play normal and use the rebuy as a saftey net haha, the addon I'll always take in these types of games, there will be no huge chip stacks so the chips really make a difference.

One thing I haven't really considered much at all is when to add-on and rebuy when I can only do so once each. Any thoughts on this? Is your preference strong or mild, and why?
